Abuse Intervention Program

Ending domestic abuse through education and accountability

The Abuse Intervention Program (AIP) is an educational forum for men or women who abuse their partners.  Participants in the program learn how to replace their use of controlling and violent behaviors with nonviolent and egalitarian behaviors within the family environment.

The AIP curriculum is based on eight main themes of equality and nonviolence.  Each theme is covered in three-week modules:

  • Nonviolence
  • Non-threatening Behavior
  • Respect
  • Support and Trust
  • Honesty and Accountability
  • Sexual Respect
  • Partnership
  • Negotiation and Fairness

During each module, the participant will also be presented with information regarding new coping, communication, and empathy skills.

A minimum commitment of 26 weeks to AIP is necessary to achieve the goals of the program.  During that time, the participant must achieve the following:

  • Be honest and open about one's abusive behaviors
  • Expect to be held accountable to the group, as well as to the legal system when appropriate
  • Meet all attendance, homework completion, and participation requirements
  • Pay all service fees on time (service fees are calculated according to a sliding scale based on personal income)
AIP offers an opportunity for abusive people to change their lives by changing the way they think and behave toward their partners, their families, and ultimately the world around them
